The cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor, used to treat patients with plaque buildup in their arteries, is often prescribed for people with coronary artery disease or high cholesterol, a leading cause of death in the United States.
Crestor, known generically as rosuvastatin, has been shown to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood by about 50 percent in patients with coronary artery disease, according to research presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in September.
"Everyone reacts differently to statin medications," said Dr. Emily Carter, a cardiologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York who was not involved in the study. "Crestor lowers blood cholesterol levels and may have other benefits in treating heart disease."
The new study looked at the risk of heart attacks and stroke in people taking Crestor compared with those taking a dummy drug called simvastatin, the same drug used to treat heart disease in some other statins.
Crestor is the generic name for rosuvastatin, an atorvastatin calcium.
Simvastatin is a prescription drug that is commonly prescribed for high cholesterol, but there has been little research about its effect on heart disease, the researchers reported in the journalJAMA Internal Medicine.
"The findings are intriguing, as many other statins have been associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and stroke," Carter said.
Rosuvastatin was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 for use in patients with coronary artery disease and high cholesterol, and it has been shown to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood by about 50 percent.
The results are published in the journalCirculation.
"We're still trying to find out how statins affect the cardiovascular system, but it may be possible to have more personalized, targeted therapies to treat cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease," Carter said. "This study adds to our understanding that statins can play a role in managing high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease in patients with coronary artery disease or high cholesterol."
The researchers noted that the results were limited because they were limited by the small sample size.
"Statins may play a role in managing high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease in patients with coronary artery disease or high cholesterol," Carter said. "Our results suggest that there is still a possibility that statins could be beneficial in managing high cholesterol and heart disease."
The results were published in the journal
"We wanted to see what patients would react to statin therapy, which may include additional therapies to lower cholesterol levels and potentially reduce cardiovascular events," the study authors wrote.
The findings were published in the journal
"It's important to understand that there is a potential for interactions between statins and medications, but we don't know which ones could be most beneficial," the researchers said.
Crestor was also shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke in people taking it, as well as to reduce the risk of strokes in people taking simvastatin.
"In people taking rosuvastatin, we found that there was a significantly greater reduction in heart attacks and strokes compared to rosuvastatin or simvastatin, compared to people taking a dummy drug," the authors said.
"We were also able to compare the impact of these changes to rosuvastatin and simvastatin in people with coronary artery disease and high cholesterol," the study authors said.
The results are in theJournal of the American College of Cardiology.

The US drugmaker Pfizer will lose its US patent protection for Crestor from Tuesday, it reported.
Shares of the US-based drug giant were trading up 1.1 per cent to $30.36. The S& P 500 was up 1.7 per cent to $34.46.
The patent will expire in 2017, though Pfizer will be in the process of filing an appeal with the Food and Drug Administration, which will decide whether to add it to its own patent protection.
Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering drug, is also one of the most popular statins on the market. It is prescribed to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in both adults and children. It is also used to prevent high blood pressure and migraines. Pfizer’s patent on Crestor expires in 2023.

Pfizer said Tuesday that it was reviewing its patent on the drug for a number of other reasons.
Pfizer UK, a UK-based biotech company with a global business focusing on cardiovascular disease, said the decision would come with a range of considerations including whether the drug will be approved by the FDA and whether the side effects caused by the drug are generally acceptable.
Pfizer shares were down 4.5 per cent in the previous session.
Crestor’s patent was initially given for a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, a type of enlarged prostate, but the FDA had not yet ruled on the subject. Pfizer said Monday it is reviewing the decision.
Shares of Cym Rx, a British-based prescription medicine company, rose 1.6 per cent to $14.44.

ViewWe have received reports of problems in the stock.
Shares of Teva Pharmaceuticals Ltd., which is based in Ireland, rose 1.6 per cent to $20.48 in the week ended Sept. 28, after the stock price was affected by a drop in the index. The generic drug Crestor, which has been in use since the patent for Lipitor expired in 1997, will become the world's top-selling medication for high cholesterol and cardiovascular problems, the Food and Drug Administration said on Monday.
The drug will be available on prescription by the FDA starting January 18. It will cost $2.41 per pill, according to the FDA. The cost for a daily dose of one tablet per day will start at $0.83.
The generic drug, also called Lipitor, will be on the market in November.
Crestor, approved by the FDA for the treatment of heart failure and some other conditions, will be the top-selling cholesterol medication in the world, according to an analysis by the pharmaceutical group. The company's Crestor, which will be made by the same company as Lipitor, will be available for free from a pharmacy at most major retailers.
The FDA also announced last year that it would allow generic drug manufacturers to launch their generic versions of Lipitor, the world's biggest drug, after Pfizer Inc.'s Lipitor (atorvastatin), which had been the most popular.
Lipitor is a cholesterol-lowering drug that has been used by millions of men since the mid-1980s. It was first used as a treatment for heart disease in men in the 1930s. But because of its cost, Lipitor has become so popular that it was first used as a lifestyle medication to treat patients with high blood pressure and angina.
The FDA said that the drug's cost for a daily dose will increase as its patent expires. But Crestor is now the world's top-selling medication, with sales of $1 billion last year.
The company's generic is a similar type of cholesterol drug called Lipitor.
"Lipitor (or its generic equivalent) will be available on prescription to treat high cholesterol and cardiovascular problems in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or other risk factors," the company said in a statement. "We look forward to the availability of generic Lipitor (or its generic version) on the market next year."
Lipitor is a cholesterol-lowering drug that has been available for about five years. It is also used to treat the symptoms of an underactive thyroid gland in women who are pregnant, or who have certain types of thyroid problems. It is the second-biggest drug in the world.
The FDA said that the generic is an "alternative" to the branded drug, the world's leading pharmaceutical company. Lipitor and its generic will be available on the market by July.
The FDA also announced that it will allow generics manufacturers to market their generic versions of Lipitor, the world's biggest drug, after Pfizer Inc.'s Lipitor (atorvastatin) had launched its generic in the United States last month.
The company's generic Lipitor will be available in about a dozen U. S. pharmacies and stores across the country, with the exception of a small number of local pharmacies, said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, the health and science director of Public Citizen's health research group. In addition, he said, the company has allowed the generic version of Lipitor to be sold in Puerto Rico, and its U. sales have been up about 8 percent over the past year.
A spokesperson for Pfizer said, "We are pleased to be able to offer our generic, Lipitor, at an affordable price and under a new marketing authorization program."
The FDA said it was reviewing the company's request to sell its U. sales of the generic in the United States and Puerto Rico.
In a statement, Pfizer said: "The FDA has informed us that the U. Food and Drug Administration has approved Lipitor (atorvastatin) for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, and has granted Pfizer Inc.'s request for approval of a generic version of Lipitor (Lipitor) as a treatment for such conditions."
Pfizer has said it would continue to supply the drug, but has been unable to deliver it in the U. market.
In November, a Pfizer spokesman said that he was aware of a similar challenge but that the company would not comment on whether the FDA had approved the drug.
